Learning to reading well in a new language is an important step to becoming fluent in that language. The key is to take it slowly, and, if at all possible, to read materials that you enjoy reading.
While this isn’t always possible in class, it is possible outside of class. Make the time to find and read material that you want to read because you are interested in it, and not because, “it’s good for you.” Like everything else, if you enjoy doing something, you are much more likely to do it.
Writing is a skill that many people find challenging in their own language, and so it is natural that it is even more challenging in a new language. While there are systems and patterns to English writing, many teachers will tell you that the best way to become a better writer is to become a better reader.
It is also important to realize that different languages organize and explain their ideas differently. This is why I always tell my students to write an English essay, not just an essay in English. I will be sharing videos on how to organize your writing in English over the next weeks and months, so make sure you check back often!
